Colour Me Summer: My Japanese Summer Fashion Must-Haves 🌼
Colour Me Summer: My Japanese Summer Fashion Must-Haves 🌼
There is something about summer in Japan that humbles you very quickly. One minute you are stepping out feeling cute and confident, and the next minute the humidity has turned your carefully styled hair into a survival story. If you know, you know. Japanese summers are no joke. The heat is intense, the humidity is aggressive, and suddenly fashion becomes less about suffering for beauty and more about finding outfits that let you breathe while still serving looks.
As we step into summer here in Japan, I have officially decided that this is my season of colour. After spending so much time hiding comfortably in neutrals, blacks, creams, browns, and oversized “safe” outfits, I am ready to flirt with bright yellows, juicy oranges, playful pinks, and every happy colour in between. If the weather is going to stress me anyway, I might as well look like sunshine while experiencing it.
This summer, my wardrobe mood board is basically “comfortable but artsy girl who accidentally walked into a fashion editorial.” Think flowy long skirts dancing in the wind at the train station, oversized blouses catching the summer breeze, and dramatic balloon skirts that make you feel like the main character buying iced coffee from the nearest convenience store.
One thing I have learned while living in Japan is that summer fashion here is truly about balance. You want to stay cool, but you also want to stay covered enough to survive the sun and blend into the modest street fashion culture that Japan is known for. The girls here have mastered the art of looking effortlessly stylish while also secretly protecting themselves from UV rays like professional vampires.
Loose silhouettes become your best friend. Linen and cotton will save your life. I repeat: linen and cotton will save your life. There is a reason why oversized linen button-ups become everybody’s personality every summer. A breathable oversized shirt layered over a moisture-wicking tank top with wide-leg trousers? Elite. Comfortable, chic, and practical enough for running around Tokyo stations trying not to miss your train.
And can we talk about skirts for a second? Because skirts are absolutely carrying my summer wardrobe this year. Long flowy skirts, tech cargo skirts, layered skirts, balloon skirts, textured skirts… honestly if it swishes dramatically while I walk, I probably want it. Japanese summer styling makes modest fashion feel so elegant and effortless. Pairing a flowy maxi skirt with a fitted tee or cropped blouse creates that soft feminine silhouette without feeling uncomfortable in the heat.
I am also completely obsessed with culottes and barrel pants lately. They are airy, stylish, and perfect for days when your legs simply cannot deal with jeans touching your skin. Jorts are also making a huge comeback, and honestly? I get it now. Styled correctly with an oversized shirt, cute accessories, and comfortable sandals, they give effortless cool-girl energy.
And dresses? Oh, we are absolutely entering our “long and flowy dress” era. The kind of dresses that move beautifully when the wind hits. The kind that make grocery shopping feel cinematic. Japanese summers somehow make you romanticize everything, even sweating while carrying your umbrella and Pocari Sweat.
Speaking of umbrellas, if you are travelling to Japan during summer, please understand this now: the UV parasol girlies are not being dramatic. They are surviving. A UV-cut parasol, a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, and portable fans quickly become essentials rather than accessories. Summer in Japan teaches you that protecting your skin is part of the outfit.
Now let us discuss footwear because this is where dreams meet reality. In theory, I want to wear the cutest shoes imaginable. In reality, Japan will have you walking 20,000 steps in one day without even realizing it. So comfort matters deeply.
This summer I really want to experiment more with Tabi shoes. There is something so unique and artistic about them that I absolutely love. They instantly elevate even the simplest outfit and give that cool Japanese street-fashion touch. I am also staying loyal to mesh flats because they are breathable, lightweight, and surprisingly versatile. And honestly, anything from Birkenstock continues to have my heart because comfortable sandals are practically a spiritual need during Japanese summer.
One underrated tip for dressing in Japan during summer is layering lightly. Air conditioning indoors can feel like entering another climate zone altogether. One second you are melting outside, the next second you are freezing inside a train or café. Lightweight cardigans, open-knit layers, or breathable button-ups become lifesavers.
Another thing I love about Japanese summer fashion is how expressive it can be without trying too hard. People here play with textures, proportions, silhouettes, and accessories in such a creative way. You start realizing that style is not always about wearing the boldest thing in the room. Sometimes it is the way someone styled an oversized white shirt with long socks and simple sandals that makes you stare respectfully from across the street wondering if they are secretly a fashion editor.
This summer, I really want to challenge myself to have more fun with fashion again. More colour. More experimenting. More confidence. More pieces that make me smile when I wear them. Fashion should feel playful sometimes. It should feel expressive. It should feel like art you get to carry around every day.
So if you are living in Japan or planning to visit this summer, my biggest advice is this: dress for the weather, but do not lose your personality in the process. Choose breathable fabrics, comfortable shoes, and sun protection, but still allow yourself to explore silhouettes, colours, and styles that make you feel beautiful.
And if you see me this summer dramatically walking through Tokyo in a bright yellow balloon skirt with a parasol in one hand and iced tea in the other… mind your business. I am healing through fashion. ☀️✨

The skirts always get me. About to have a serious collection.
