Fashion in Japan vs. Fashion in Zimbabwe: My Two Cents

Fashion in Japan vs. Fashion in Zimbabwe: My Two Cents

When it comes to fashion, every country has its own unique style and cultural influences that shape how people dress. Having lived in Japan for over a year now, I’ve observed some interesting contrasts between Japanese fashion and Zimbabwean fashion. Of course, this is just my perspective—I’m not saying this is the ultimate truth, just my take on things! So, let’s dive into it!

Japan: Comfort is King

One thing I’ve noticed about Japanese fashion is that comfort takes center stage. It’s all about being as relaxed and easygoing as possible while still looking stylish. Sneakers rule the streets here—brands like New Balance and Nike are a staple, and you’ll rarely see someone struggling in painful heels or overly tight shoes. Instead, they opt for the most comfortable footwear they can find.

Modesty is another key feature of Japanese fashion. Long dresses, flowing skirts, baggy jeans, and loose trousers are incredibly popular. The combination of relaxed silhouettes with sneakers creates an effortlessly chic look. Another interesting trend here is platform shoes—thick, chunky soles seem to be a favorite, and I can’t tell if it’s just a trend or a long-standing preference, but they love it!

Then there’s the kawaii culture. This is where young girls take fashion to a playful, almost anime-like level—think pigtails, bright pastel dresses in pinks, blues, and whites, bold makeup, and statement boots. It’s like stepping into a real-life anime scene. It’s fun, youthful, and unapologetically cute.

For the men, especially working-class men, dark colors dominate. Black, navy, and other deep tones are the go-to shades. There’s an undeniable sleekness to their style, whether it’s in business wear or casual fashion. Japan truly has a minimalist yet elegant approach to dressing.

Zimbabwe: Trend-Driven and Bold

Zimbabwean fashion, on the other hand, is all about trends. It’s fascinating to look back at different fashion eras and see how people’s styles evolve with what’s hot at the moment. There was a time when baggy clothing took over, then came the skinny jeans era, and who can forget the Samba sneaker wave? Now, the trend has shifted to New Balance sneakers and the “clean girl” aesthetic—effortless but well-put-together looks.

Unlike Japan, where comfort is the priority, Zimbabweans love to keep up with what’s trending worldwide. There’s a boldness and confidence in the way Zimbabweans dress. And, of course, I can’t talk about fashion in Zimbabwe without appreciating the rich traditional African attire. African prints, vibrant colors, and cultural pieces that celebrate heritage are still embraced. I love rocking my Afro and representing my African roots in my fashion choices.

Which One Do I Prefer?

Honestly, I love them both! Japan’s relaxed and comfy approach to fashion speaks to my soul—I love sneakers, loose fits, and minimalistic styles. But Zimbabwe’s vibrant and ever-evolving fashion scene also excites me. The ability to switch between modern trends and deeply rooted cultural fashion is something I admire.

At the end of the day, fashion is all about self-expression. Whether you’re drawn to comfort or trends, or like me, you enjoy a mix of both, the best fashion choice is the one that makes you feel good.

  3. Shaa!🥹 it brings me so much joy to see that Zimbabweans are still embracing African prints and constantly finding creative ways to reinvent them. They incorporate these prints into different forms like handbags and other fashion pieces. No matter what they wear, there’s always a connection back to the roots. I absolutely love that🥰
At the same time, I’m also fascinated by Japanese fashion. It’s on another level so unique, bold, and effortlessly stylish. They really know how to dress🙌🏼
