The Beauty of Stories: My Love for Literature and A Dive into The Alchemist
If you truly know me, then you know how much I love reading. Literature has always been my escape, my teacher, and my source of inspiration. I’ve explored different worlds through the words of European, American, and African writers—each offering a unique perspective on life, love, ambition, and self-discovery.
Recently, I found myself revisiting The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a book that has resonated with many readers across the globe. If you haven’t read it yet, here’s a little insight into this timeless classic.
The Alchemist follows Santiago, a young shepherd from Spain who dreams of finding a hidden treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. As he embarks on this journey, he meets various people—a king, a crystal merchant, an Englishman, and an alchemist—who shape his understanding of the world and himself.
But more than a literal quest for gold, The Alchemist is a spiritual and philosophical journey about listening to one’s heart, following one’s dreams, and understanding that the universe conspires to help those who truly seek their Personal Legend (their true purpose in life).
Key Takeaways from The Alchemist, Throughout the book, Santiago learns that our hearts often know what we truly desire, but fear and doubt hold us back. The lesson? Trust your intuition.
One of the most famous quotes from the book says, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” It’s a reminder that faith, hard work, and persistence align the world in your favor.
Santiago faces obstacles, but each one teaches him something valuable. Similarly, our struggles aren’t setbacks; they are stepping stones.
In the end, Santiago’s treasure isn’t just material wealth—it’s the wisdom, growth, and understanding he gains through his journey.
After reading The Alchemist, I reflected on my own journey, my dreams, and the things I sometimes hesitate to pursue. It made me realize that the path to success is not just about reaching the destination but embracing the process along the way.
This year, I want to immerse myself in more African literature—stories that reflect the richness, struggles, and beauty of African cultures, traditions, and modern experiences. Here are some books I plan to read, and I’d love for you to join me:
1. I Was Raised to Be Maame, Now I Want to Be Me – Abena Boamah
2. Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? – Lizzie Damilola Blackburn
3. The Yearning – Mohale Mashigo
4. My Sister, the Serial Killer – Oyinkan Braithwaite
5. Honey and Spice – Bolu Babalola
6. Transcendent Kingdom – Yaa Gyasi
7. Invisible Strings – Nwamaka Agugua
8. His Only Wife – Peace Adzo Medie
