Tariro: A Multifaceted Creative Carving Her Own Path
Tariro: A Multifaceted Creative Carving Her Own Path
In Zimbabwe’s ever-evolving creative scene, one name continues to rise and shine—Tariro, also known as musethemua. She is a videographer, photographer, and makeup artist whose artistic vision is redefining storytelling through different mediums. From capturing raw emotions behind the lens to enhancing beauty with a brushstroke, Tariro’s journey is a testament to curiosity, self-belief, and relentless creativity.
For Tariro, creativity wasn’t something she stumbled upon—it was woven into her upbringing. Her father was a photographer, and through his work, she found a connection that sparked her own artistic journey. But she didn't stop at just photography. Driven by curiosity and experimentation, she explored videography and makeup artistry, recognizing how these crafts intertwine to create compelling narratives.
"I like to create for myself and think of everyone else as a bonus," she says, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in an industry that often demands conformity.
One of Tariro’s most exciting projects to date is "Mona Lisa," a visually stunning music video she directed for 44 Msalad. The process was both exhilarating and challenging, as she had to juggle multiple roles on set. Yet, her passion and the support of a dedicated team brought the vision to life. The video tells a heartfelt story of love, relationships, and the everyday struggles that can make people overlook their partners—but also how they can make things right.
However, the project closest to her heart is her recent documentary, Boldly Bald. Still in post-production, this film carries deep personal significance, shining a light on powerful stories that she hopes will resonate with audiences worldwide. “It’s heavily engraved in my heart and mind,” she shares.
Being a creative in Zimbabwe comes with its fair share of challenges. The industry isn’t always welcoming, and opportunities can be scarce. Tariro has learned that waiting for platforms to be created for you is a losing game. Instead, she believes in building her own:
"In Zimbabwe, if you wait for platforms, you might wait a lifetime. You need to create your own platforms and community, or the industry will frustrate you."
This mindset has driven her to push boundaries, take risks, and prove that you don’t need fancy equipment or big budgets to create magic. Her first music video? Shot on a Samsung S7. Proof that creativity isn’t about the tools—it’s about vision and execution.
As she continues to evolve in her craft, Tariro is eager to work on more music videos and collaborate with other creatives. She’s particularly excited for the release of Boldly Bald, a project she hopes will spark conversations and inspire many.
For anyone looking to break into the creative world, she offers simple but powerful advice:
"Cheesy as it may sound, just do it. With whatever resources at your disposal, cancel out the noise, and go for it."
And that’s the essence of Tariro—a fearless storyteller, a visionary behind the lens, and a creator who refuses to wait for opportunities but instead makes them happen.
“Don’t wait for doors to open. Build your own house and invite the world inside.”
