Discovering Donnel Mango: A Multifaceted ZimCreative on the Rise

Zimbabwe’s creative scene is brimming with talent, and Donnel Mango is a shining example of what it means to be a true multidisciplinary artist. A singer, model, graphic designer, filmmaker, DJ, and fashionista, Donnel’s journey is as vibrant as the work he creates. With an unrelenting passion for the arts and a unique ability to weave his talents together, Donnel is not just a creative; he’s a visionary.

Donnel’s passion for the arts was nurtured by a family steeped in creativity. Growing up under the wing of his uncle Leonard Mapfumo, the legendary musician behind “Two Chete,” Donnel was immersed in a world of music and artistry from an early age. “Being in the studio with my uncle ignited my passion for creativity,” Donnel shares. “He gave me my first big break, and I’ve been running with it ever since.”

From graphic designing and videography for the NAMA Awards to projects for Dreamstar Zimbabwe, Donnel’s early foray into the creative world laid the foundation for his dynamic career.

As a member of the Maddawgs DJ team, Donnel seamlessly blends his love for music with his other creative pursuits. “Music has a way of opening doors,” he explains. “When I’m on stage, it’s not just about the performance; it’s an opportunity to share my passions for filmmaking and graphic design.”

This multidimensional approach is at the heart of Maddawgs, a collective that celebrates creativity in all its forms. With collaborators like Ebbenezer Muchuwa, Donnel is redefining what it means to be a Zimbabwean creative.

For Donnel, fashion is more than clothing—it’s a universal language. Inspired by fearless style icons like ASAP Bari, Donnel’s fashion aesthetic is a bold blend of freedom and spontaneity. “Fashion has no limits,” he says. “I dress how I feel, letting my mood guide my wardrobe choices. It’s my way of telling a story without words.”

Despite juggling multiple disciplines, Donnel’s portfolio is packed with standout projects. From designing album covers for Leonard Mapfumo to directing Voltz Jt’s Mari Inebasa Rei, and even DJing in Zambia with the Fabrik Party Movement, Donnel’s work speaks to his versatility and drive.

Yet, he’s just getting started. Under his stage name Dial-a-Doobie, Donnel recently released his single “Dope Man,” marking an exciting new chapter in his music career.

The Zimbabwean creative industry isn’t without its hurdles. “The lack of effective marketing strategies has been a challenge,” Donnel reflects. “But I believe in building strong communities that promote authentic, high-quality work.”

Through platforms like Skeyi and Strobo, Donnel sees hope for a brighter future where Zimbabwean talent is celebrated on a global scale.

For young creatives, Donnel offers sage advice: “Allocate your time effectively, build a supportive community, and invest in education. These principles will guide you through the multifaceted world of the arts.”

The future looks bright for Donnel Mango. With plans to release more music, graduate as a professional graphic designer, and direct a high-profile project in 2025, he’s poised to leave an indelible mark on the creative world.

As he puts it, “My aspirations know no bounds, and I’m committed to pushing the limits of creativity in every way possible.”

Donnel Mango’s story is a testament to the power of passion and versatility. Whether he’s on stage, behind the camera, or designing the next big project, Donnel is proof that creativity knows no limits.

"Creativity is not a job; it’s a way of life. Embrace every facet of your talent, and the world will embrace you back." – Donnel Mango
