The Melody of My Life: How Music Shaped Me
The Melody of My Life: How Music Shaped Me
Growing up in a household where music was a constant companion felt like living inside a never-ending playlist. The speakers in our home were always alive with melodies, carrying the voices of The Fugees, Beyoncé, Bob Marley, and a myriad of other artists. My family had an eclectic taste in music, and it rubbed off on me in ways that continue to influence my life today.
My brothers played a significant role in shaping my musical journey. They introduced me to genres that I might not have gravitated toward on my own—reggae, hip-hop, jazz, soulful ballads, and even some classic rock. Life lessons also steered me toward certain singers. Their lyrics felt like a conversation with my soul, teaching me resilience, love, and introspection.
Reggae was one of the first genres to sink its roots into my heart. The raw honesty of Bob Marley’s lyrics coupled with the rhythmic beats made me feel connected to something greater. Pop music and jazz brought lightness and sophistication, while soulful tracks spoke to my emotions in ways words never could. And hip-hop? That was rebellion, truth, and style all rolled into one.
Music didn’t just shape my ears—it shaped my style. Watching 90s and early 2000s music videos was like flipping through a fashion magazine. I was captivated by the oversized jeans, the bold hairstyles, the afros, and the chic vintage flair of that era. I remember begging my mom for a fur jacket after watching S Club 7 on TV. Never mind that Zimbabwe didn’t have snow—I wanted it for the vibes.
Listening to Tupac at such a tender age was a curious experience, to say the least. I may not have understood all his messages back then, but I felt the gravity of his words. His music planted seeds of awareness and reflection. On the gospel side, acapella groups like Shower Power, Reunion, and Pentatonix carried me through tough times with their harmonies and deeply moving lyrics.
My love for gospel music even led me to join a singing group at church. Those were magical moments—standing in front of a congregation, harmonizing with my peers, and feeling the music connect us all to something higher. Music, I realized, is more than just a rhythm or a rhyme. It’s a lifeline, a message, and a balm for the soul.
Looking back, it’s clear that music has been my compass, my comfort, and my creative spark. It taught me how to express myself, to feel deeply, and to see the beauty in life—even in the hard times. As I continue to hum the songs that shaped me, I carry a piece of every artist, every lyric, and every beat with me.
As Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” For me, music has been more than that—it’s been the sound of my growth, my dreams, and my journey.
